Poster Child

I turn twenty-one years old on Thursday*. I leave the country, not to return until December, on Friday. The following Saturday, I will be in London. The following Monday, I will be in Munich, and then in Salzburg approximately two hours later (or so my itinerary says).

Before these days come to pass, I have to do the following:
-Begin one travel blog (and think of a name for said blog. See me with any ideas)
-Shop for various small items, including, of all things, a winter hat (where am I going to find one of those at the beginning of September? Again, see me with ideas)
-Clean the bottomless pit of despair that used to be my bedroom
-Work four more shifts at Target (3 of which begin at 4 a.m.)
-Pack one large suitcase and two small carryons with enough clothes and books and random necessities to keep me happy until December
-Win/Steal/Pawn family jewels to buy a Kindle so I don't have to tote aforementioned books across Europe (ignore this post. Books are heavy.)
-Say goodbye to 2 wonderful parents and 2 gloriously smelly German Shepherd dogs
-Relearn all of the German I've forgotten over the past three months (I know, I know: good luck with that, Holly)

On a happier note, I think I've officially hit all the emotions commonly associated with study abroad preparations. You've seen excited, you've seen scared, you've seen wistful, and now you're seeing stressed.

I feel like one of those posters you see in a guidance counselor's office. You know: the one with the awkward photo of a '90s teenager holding a book and a backpack and somehow managing to look pleasant and disparaging at the same time? That's me.

*Remember when you and your friends Googled the day of your 21st birthdays to see if they fell on weekends (for optimal partying, of course)? Well, I never actually did that, but now that I'm approaching the monumental day, I greatly appreciate that it's a Thursday. You know I love Thursdays. Whenever something exceedingly strange or exceedingly wonderful happens to me, it's always on a Thursday. Here's hoping Thursday won't let me down this week.

I Need to Get Out of the Country

I need to get out of the country.
My life has turned into a monotonous string of work days and non work days.

On work days I wake up at 5:15 a.m. after about six hours of sleep. I listen to music on the way to work, which cheers me up briefly, but as soon as I'm facing the double doors of Target, knowing I won't emerge again until 3:00, I lose my courage. I still like my job, but I think it's gotten to the point where not much can sway me anymore. Not much tries to sway me anymore. Every day is the same, with only a few variations: I cover two electronics breaks instead of three, I see a former high school teacher wearing summer clothing and I am strangely embarrassed for them and for myself, I have cherries instead of a peach in my lunch. It's getting more and more difficult to pretend that these variations are something special.

On non work days I sleep in until 9:15. I then have decisions to make: should I watch TV, read, or fiddle around on Mac? Should I do Tae Bo, Gilad, or Gunnar Peterson? How much longer can I procrastinate on replying to that email or depositing that check or putting away my clean laundry?

There are sparks of hope and there are sparks of fun, but I think mostly I'm getting that feeling I get every summer around this time.

I need to get out of the country.

I suppose Austria will do.

Another Finals Week

Finals week has rolled around once again, and, as you've come to expect, I will spend most of my time from now until Thursday evening:
a) Studying/writing papers/taking exams
b) Complaining to you about studying/writing papers/taking exams

Prepare accordingly.

Here's the agenda:
Monday:
German final from 8:30-10:30
American Lit. final 11:00-1:00

Tuesday
American Lit. response paper due 4:00

Thursday
Art History final 4:00-6:00

And of course I also have to work a lot during finals week, and I have to finish up my study abroad planning, and I have to begin packing up my maelstrom of a room in preparation for my Thursday night departure.

And of course of course the weather right now is absolutely perfect; 66 degrees, sunny, breezy, and bugless. That's what I'm told, at least; the basement of the Science Building doesn't have any windows.

Fun Fact: Last night I had a dream that I was running around inside a Revolutionary War-era house that had belonged to someone named Brady. This morning I did a Wikipedia search and found out that Samuel Brady was a Revolutionary War hero (and an all-around cool guy). It's funny, because I don't think I've ever heard that name before. Apparently my subconscious has.

Friday Doings

Not that my day has been particularly earth-shattering (so far), but if you've been wondering what exactly occurs in my daily life that leads me to post the way I do, here you go:

7:11 a.m. (for some reason whenever I wake up during the night or early in the morning before going back to sleep, I always remember the exact time I woke up, down to the minute. Weird.) Woke up coughing (that's right, The Cold still lives.), bobbed head up to gulp water and check clock. Bobbed head back down and feel back to sleep.

8:00 a.m. My alarm went off. Time to get up for real. Did I? Nope.

8:49 a.m. Woke up again. Bobbed head up to see that The Roommate was dressed and reaching for her backpack. She has class at 9:15 as well. Gave shriek of horror, then jumped out of bed and rushed around getting dressed. For the first time in about a year I didn't have time to put mascara on (sad, I know).

9:05 a.m. Left dorm with The Roommate, heading to class. It was snowing outside, which for some reason disoriented me. Isn't March supposed to mean spring? Or is this just the lion end?

9:15 a.m. American Literature II began. We discussed George Chesnutt's "The Goophered Grapevine." I liked the story all right, but I don't think it's something I could write a 4 page paper on. Unfortunately, I have no choice, as I've procrastinated on the required paper all semester.

10:20 a.m. Class ended. I walked back to my dorm via The Student Center because it's warm and because I like to see what's going on.

10:25 a.m. Back in room. Folded/hung up laundry from last night. The wrinkles, I suppose, are my own fault.

11:14 a.m. Walked with The Roommate to lunch. Ate with Katie, Evan, Mariah, Aaron, Tim and King. I had fish, a salad, and a cookie, in case you were wondering.

11:35 a.m. Headed to class.

11:45 a.m. Beginning German II began. We had a test on Wednesday, so we started a new unit today. Said new unit is all about food and drink, apparently, which should be interesting. I embarrassed myself considerably by shouting out "Spinach!!" when the professor asked what the green blob in the picture was. It wasn't spinach. It was noodles. Hmph. Looked like spinach.

12:50 p.m. Deutsch over, walked back to dorm with Aaron (a different Aaron from the one I ate lunch with).

1:00 p.m. Chatted with The Roommate a little bit before plopping down on my bed with Mac. Went through my bookmarks bar, as I do a few times every day. Here's the order: Facebook, UMM email, Apple movie trailers, IMDB, The Pioneer Woman, 4 or so other random blogs I follow, and a quote-of-the-day website. I usually try to check BBC and Huffington Post as well, but didn't feel like it today. Then, of course, I came to my own blog. Hi.

Finals Week, Part II

I'm on a study break. I tried to do an hour of straight memorizing American writers and their works and the terms that describe their works, and I barely made it.

It's only the first day of Finals Week, and my brain hurts.

Maybe because I spent all weekend (literally) trying to make a thesis based on an essay we read in Honors, based on one of the paper topics provided. It kept not working and not working until I finally realized that it was not going to work. So, I switched topics. At 2 a.m. this morning. Wrote until 5. Woke up at 10. Wrote until 3:30. Turned the paper in about fifteen minutes before it was due. And it was probably the worst paper I've ever written. Not for lack of effort, but because I didn't have time to make it good.

That's the worst thing about this semester, I think. I'm trying so hard but my grades still aren't where I'd like them to be because I don't have time to focus on one subject or one paper or one reading for very long; the others start calling to me before I have a chance to even sit and consider.

Now my brain hurts and I don't think I can spend much more time with this American Lit. stuff I'm currently doing.

But okay. Here's the plan:

Tonight: Finish typing up study guide for Am. Lit. Study study guide.

Tomorrow: German final 11-1, study Am. Litl, Am. Lit. final 4-6, Work on Understanding Writing paper, Writing Room work 7-7:30, Info. Desk work 8-10, Finish Understanding Writing paper

Wednesday: Social Science work 9:30-11:30, Think of an idea for/research/write Icelandic Sagas paper. All day. Get 'er done. Info. Desk work 6-8. Finish Icelandic Sagas paper. Preferably before 3 a.m.

Thursday: You're not done with Icelandic Sagas? You've got to be kidding me, Hol...well...you have until 4:30. WRITE. After 4:30, take a few cleansing breaths, collapse limply on bed, then get up and start packing. 7:30 Mom arrives. Load car. Go home. Sleep until Saturday.

It's 10:14. 4 minutes past my alloted break time. Must go.

A Mellow Post For a Mellow Day

It's been an extremely low key day, despite some confusion on my part (though that's certainly nothing new).
Classes were so-so, breaks between classes were 20 minutes of gathering books and trying to finish reading Pride and Prejudice, and conversations with friends were limited to texts (see only 20 minutes between classes).
Now I'm sitting in the Student Center tabling for Support the U Day. Tabling is exactly what it sounds like; you sit at a table decked out with bright posters and candy incentives and hassle passers-by until they either sign up for your event or run away. The latter seems to be popular today.

As for the confusion, hopefully that's over now. For some reason early February is really busy for me, and I've been trying to sort out my schedule all day. Here's what today and tomorrow are looking like so far:

Today (Tuesday)
8:00-1:40 Class
2:30-4:30 Tabling (current activity)
4:30-5:00 Jeopardy (I know, I know, but it's Jeopardy!)
5:00-5:30 Dinner at Food Service
5:30-6:30 Intramural Volleyball practice at the RFC
7:00-9:00 Homework time (if all goes well)
9:17-10:00 Community Council Meeting
10:00-12:00 More homework time!
12:00-12:30 Shower, get ready for bed
1:00 Go to sleep (goodness knows I need it)

Wednesday
10:30 Wake up, get dressed
11:35-12:00 Eat lunch
12:00-2:00 Do homework, finish article for U.R.
2:00-3:20 Class
3:30-4:30 Meeting with Prof. about the Essay Contest
4:30-5:00 Jeopardy!
6:00-7:00 Pizza party for Support the U Day
7:00-8:00 College Bowl meeting
8:00-9:00 RFC with Maddie, Ben, Tim, and Chris?
9:00-12:00 Shower/homework
12:00 Bed (gosh I hope so)

So there it is. Just two days, and as you may have noticed, they both are absolutely crammed packed. As you may have also noticed, there is hardly any time for homework, and there is absolutely zero free time (not counting Jeopardy). Why is this, you may ask? Because in college, or at least at UMM, free time is homework time. I don't think I've ever once sat down and thought, "There's absolutely no studying I can be doing right now." Now this doesn't mean that whenever I have a few free minutes I do homework (far from it), it just means that it's always hovering over my head (which is rather disconcerting, to say the least).

Okay, I should post this into the void and sign off now.
Please know that despite my schedule I'm still having the time of my life here on the frozen tundra of UMM. Cheers!

Don't Stop Believin'

This weekend has given me hope for the future. After a rather stressful week, I needed a relaxing, fun couple of days. And I certainly got them.

Friday:
1. Got told by a couple of guys that Jesus loves me. They weren't being sarcastic, either. That made me feel pretty darn good. Sometimes you just need someone to say it aloud to you.
2. Pizza Ranch for dinner. We just couldn't take one more food service meal. The mashed potatoes alone at P.R. may have made up for a week of bad cafeteria 'food.'
3. Went to see State Fair at Morris High School. It really wasn't very good, but certainly entertaining, and the kids had a lot of heart. Plus, it was nice to be back in a high school again.

Saturday:
1. Slept until 2:30 p.m.
2. Saw Post Comedy Theater, a one-man physical comedy act. Robert Post did a wonderful job and is very talented. However, I didn't laugh until I cried, which was a bit of a let-down.
3. Played Catch Phrase and Disney Seen It with Ben, Maddie, King, and Tim.

Sunday:
1. Woke up early and went to Church. It was nice to attend a Catholic Mass again; I've really missed it. Plus, the choir from UMM was there, so the music was absolutely beautiful.
2. Went to the UMM Concert Choir Concert. I'm so glad I went! I almost think that I would rather watch a choir perform than watch a band perform. Either way, they were amazing.
3. Dodgeball game at 8:15 tonight, and then who knows?

Procrastination

It happens to all of us.
There you sit. Your feet are firmly on the floor, your back is straight, your fingers arched gracefully above the keyboard. But nothing is happening, really. So here comes Facebook, MLIA, YouTube, BBC. Homework can wait a few hours, or at least until desperation sets in.

What am I currently procrastinating on?
Writing an article for the University Register. It's going to be about the aftermath of the Fort Hood shootings, which is actually a fairly interesting topic, but I just don't feel like writing at the moment. It doesn't help that I started rereading Gone With The Wind a few days ago, and am now having trouble putting it down.
My deadline is tomorrow at noon, so I do have time, I suppose.

What else is going on?
5:30 p.m. My dorm floor is having a pizza party/meeting
7:00 p.m. College Bowl meeting
9:13 p.m. Community Council meeting
10:00 p.m. Pirates of the Caribbean, the Musical meeting

Bed will hopefully follow shortly after Pirates.

Hmm what else?
I memorized an Emily Dickinson poem the other night. Memorizing poetry is something that is strangely easy for me. My grandpa gave me his book of poetry shortly before he died, and every so often I take it out and learn a poem or two. It usually only takes me about fifteen minutes, depending on the length of the poem. Anyway, here's the Emily Dickinson. It's short, but quite powerful, I think:

Not in Vain
If I can stop one heart from breaking,
I shall not live in vain:
If I can ease one life the aching,
Or cool one pain,
Or help one fainting robin
Unto his nest again,
I shall not live in vain.

And Now, in Other News...

This week:
1. Band concert Monday. I have a solo in Symphony that I tend to go out of tune on, so hopefully that goes well. Maybe if I play really, really loudly...

2. Work. Always, always work. I like my job, though, so no worries.

3. Friday is senior skip day. I'm skipping, but I have a valid excuse. I'm going up to Morris to register for classes. I also have to take math and spanish placement exams. Ick.

I think that's all. Just preparing for graduation in general.
